Sunday funday

These beach days are all starting to mash together.  Taking pictures and writing these recaps helps me remember.  We started a little later than previous days, about 10, and went to Manasota Key beach.  I don’t know if this is just a popular beach in general or if it was because it was Sunday, but this beach was packed, busier than anywhere else we have been so far.  Excellent place for people watching, maybe not so great for finding treasures in the sand.

The water was warm and fairly calm, and the sky was sunny and cloudless.  It was a beautiful day.  I wasn’t bothered by red tide at all, Joe was just a little bit.

We stopped at a grocery store after the beach, we really could do better at food planning.  We should have enough to get us to Wednesday now.

I had some things to mail so we stopped at the post office in downtown Venice.  Since we were there we walked down the main street.  Busy area for a Sunday afternoon, even though a bunch of the places were closed. There’s an ice cream place that makes their own waffle cones and you can smell them from a block away. We skipped the sweets, but Joe bought me a shirt.

There are a ton of trails at Oscar Scherer.  We wanted to be out at Big Lake for sunset, so around 5:30 we headed that way. I had the map so we took the wrong way a few times, but eventually made it there a little after 6.

We sat down for a few minutes and eventually spotted an alligator who appeared to be hunting for some dinner.  Good thing there are signs there that this is not a swimming lake.

On our way back we saw so many eagles and ospreys up in the trees.  They were a very vocal bunch.

We got back to the campsite and I started some laundry. So nice having this option there. Not that either of us mind wearing the same things a few times, but it’s so humid that nothing ever dries out very well.  All of our towels were getting especially gross.

Joe has been wanting shrimp tacos since we got here, so we cooked up a pretty awesome dinner.  These evenings are flying by, by the time we eat, get our stuff cleaned up and a shower it’s almost time for bed.  We skipped having a fire, it was such a nice night it wasn’t needed.

Winter trip 2026 - Day 1: Home to St. Roberts, MO

After lots of planning and packing and downsizing to get everything to fit in the new van, Planet Express, we hit the road on Friday morning just after 9am. Took 30 to 71 to 70, which Joe says is the boringest road known to man. The next 200 miles of driving weren't much better. Lots of flat and watching the snow gradually melting. Beautiful sunny day.  Made our first real stop just past the Indiana line at Uranus fudge. Worth the stop just for all the goofy signs. Bought a sticker and a fake can of spaghetti-o's to hide our valuables. On the way out we walked through this crazy tunnel and almost fell down.  We covered a lot of miles today, which was our plan. Went through Saint Louis just before the sunset, finally stopped seeing snow  We ended the day in St. Roberts, MO. First stop was the Route 66 Neon Park, which was a neat stop. They had about a dozen neon signs that have been refurbished and donated to the park. Each neon had a sign with it's histo...

Winter trip 2026 - Day 2: Missourah to Lawton, OK

It rained overnight, which is just about the best thing for sleeping. Looked like we were the only ones that spent the night at this CB. Made a quick stop for fuel next door and we were on the road by 8.  Our first stop was in Springfield to see the Largest Fork (by mass, they specified, there must be a taller one out there). As far as forks go, it was pretty damn big.  Crossed into Oklahoma, which appears to just be one big toll road. We aren't even sure what we spent since it's all just pay-by-plate, but at least $40 to get through the state. As we headed into Tulsa, we listened to the first chapter of the book The Outsiders in preparation for our next stop, The Outsiders House Museum. We watched the movie last month without realizing it was going to be on our path.  I should have paid more attention.  It was a neat little museum set in the house from the movie. The book author, SE Hinton, is from Tulsa and she still lives in the area.  They had lo...
