We woke up to a very foggy morning by the water. This was such a quiet and peaceful campsite, I would come back to this place.
On our way out we stopped at the “trash house” which has a flap in the front to toss in your garbage. The night before we had assumed there was a trash can on the other side, but Joe opened the door and said, nope, just a building full of garbage. At least they were collecting cans to recycle.
We headed north along some very long and straight highways. We stopped at a fruit/vegetable stand for a few things, and then a grocery store because that’s what we do best. Also bought fuel for the first time in over a week. Crossed into Georgia a little after noon. We were headed to a park that was supposed to be 5.5 hours away, but with our stops and one wrong turn, it took 7.
We got to Providence Canyon SP after 3. This place was so neat. The canyons were formed due to erosion. Way back when, farmers cleared the top soil and dug some ditches, and water and time have taken care of the rest.
We parked at the top, and then hiked down. And down. And down. Once at the bottom you can walk up into all of the canyons (there are 9 total) and then back out to the loop that surrounds them all.
It’s crazy how soft all this “stone” is, it’s no wonder people carve all kinds of things into the walls. We hiked into 4 different canyons and decided to skip the rest - it was hot down there. We followed the trail up, and up, and up. That was a tough trip out. We saw this sign at the top, I felt judged.
The overlooks from the top were awesome. This was a very pretty place and I’d go back if I ever found myself in this part of the state again.
No camping at this park, but we had a site booked just a few miles down the road at Florence Marina SP. This was a very big and open campground, just a short walk to the Chattahoochee River, which is the Georgia/Alabama line. Our phones thought we were close enough to Alabama that they switched over to central time. We saw a bunch of other people that had been at the canyons, I think that’s a pretty popular place to hike at and then stay here at this campground.
We grilled up some hamburgers for dinner and kept getting confused about what time it was. No sink here to do dishes, so we had to wash them in the van which is a pain. I took a shower with depressingly low water pressure and realized once I was done that I forgot my towel. I slept great.
