It rained overnight, which is just about the best thing for sleeping. Looked like we were the only ones that spent the night at this CB. Made a quick stop for fuel next door and we were on the road by 8.
Our first stop was in Springfield to see the Largest Fork (by mass, they specified, there must be a taller one out there). As far as forks go, it was pretty damn big.
Crossed into Oklahoma, which appears to just be one big toll road. We aren't even sure what we spent since it's all just pay-by-plate, but at least $40 to get through the state.
As we headed into Tulsa, we listened to the first chapter of the book The Outsiders in preparation for our next stop, The Outsiders House Museum. We watched the movie last month without realizing it was going to be on our path. I should have paid more attention. It was a neat little museum set in the house from the movie. The book author, SE Hinton, is from Tulsa and she still lives in the area.
They had lots of original props from the movie, and recreated the set pretty well. There was even a local there, Joe, who was an extra from the movie and told us about Leonardo DiCaprio recently visiting and buying some of Joe's photographs from filming.
If you know the movie, you'll remember that the neighborhood was not so good even back then (it's where the Greasers lived!). The house was in pretty bad shape until they started fixing it up about ten years ago.
Just before OKC was stopped in Acadia and saw this cool round barn. I remember it from when Regina and I drove Route 66 twenty years ago
We didn't make any stops in OKC, but did drive through a historic part of town and spotted some pretty cool old houses.
Made a quick trip off the highway to see the Chickasha Leg Lamp, which we saw a sign for at the last minute. Wish we could have been there in the dark, it lights up at night. Warner Brothers owns the rights to A Christmas Story and feels the same way about the Chickasha Leg Lamp as the Old Man feels about Bumpus' dogs.
Made it to our final town for the night just before 6. We had some time to kill so we stopped at a resale shop (lots of cool vintage toys) and goodwill (no space for anything anyway).
Planet Express had a few loose screws from all the driving, so we made a hardware store stop to pick up some new ones.
We decided to pick a casino for the night instead of Cracker Barrel. Joe dropped me off out front so I could go check in for overnight parking. The lady at the door had to call security for this, and even though I was 100% not doing anything wrong, that's not how I felt as he escorted me through pretty much the entire casino to the main desk where I had to fill out forms and let him take a picture of my driver's license on what was clearly his personal phone. Onlookers likely assumed I was being banned for counting cards.
When I walked back outside it was raining more than it has ever rained before. Torrential. We parked and ate dinner in Planet Express (mediocre leftovers from the night before and sandwiches). We decided we would each take $20 and once it was gone or we had been there for an hour we'd quit. Within about 45 minutes we were up $42 and decided to call it a night because I'm not a sucker and I know when to quit (this may or may not be foreshadowing).
It was great sleeping weather and we are still on eastern time, so it was another early night.
