Driving day 2

We had the heater turned up way too high last night. I woke up around 3am and was roasting. The easy fix there is to open the vent about my head and just let all that hot air escape. When I woke up at the second, more reasonable time of 7:30, it was already pretty bright outside. I walked a bit down to the bathrooms and while I was in there I could overhear a family in the shower on the other side of the building, a mom and two little kids probably 4 or 5. I swear in the five minutes I was there these kids asked their mom 75 questions, just one rapid-fire after another, and I was cracking up. “Mommy do I use this sponge to wash my body?” “Yes, just like at home” was second best, but eventually one of the kids super enthusiastically said “This is the best shower I have ever taken, I love this shower!”. I know the feeling buddy, nothing beats a good hot shower, especially when you have crappy ones to compare. On the road by 9am, we decided to get back on I-77 until we got into South Carolina and then head west through SC into GA. We stopped for the first time at lunch in Newberry SC and had this Japanese garden all to ourselves for a picnic. Huge bamboo! A little further down the road we started seeing signs that called an upcoming town the “peach capital of the world”. As we entered the town we started seeing rows and rows of trees that Joe was sure were pecan trees. We debated on why there would be so many pecan trees in the peach capital of the world, but thought maybe they were good at both of these things. Eventually I googled it, they were all peach groves. The only big town to drive through/near today was Augusta SC/GA. On the SC side we stopped at Lidl for some groceries and because this store is awesome. Like ALDI but with lots more grocery options. On the GA side we stopped at a flea market because we thought maybe we’d find some treasures. Bad news for us, the Barnyard Flea Market was recently voted the least likely to have hidden treasures (probably). Granted, it was Sunday afternoon and a lot of the vendors were packed up, but all of the ones that were left were either resellers; lots of opportunities for a new phone case, one-time use jeans, essential oils. We could have skipped this stop. Just a few miles down the road (after Joe refused to do some urban exploring in an entire old neighborhood that appeared to be completely abandoned and not at all somewhere we'd get murdered) we stopped at Phizney Swamp Nature Park. We did a quick walk over a boardwalk (saw a nice guy fishing some kids’ fallen binoculars out of the swamp), and saw an alligator on our way back to the car. Lots of turtles too. I would go back to this park if I was in the area again. We still had about 90 minutes of drive to our stop for the night and went through a few more small towns along the way. I entertained Joe with as many fun facts as I could find when we went through each town. At least, I thought they were fun, these were some pretty small towns do I didn't have much to work with. Arrived at George L Smith State Park in southeast GA just after 5. This site and campground were both awesome, right on the edge of the water, cypress trees galore. Lots of people had their boats/kayaks pulled right up to their campsite. We decided to go on an evening hike and were prepared to be back after dark, just like we had attempted the night before. Also like the night before, our plans were revised when we saw that not only did the trail close at night, the trail crossed the water through a covered bridge that had padlocks on both sides and no other access to get back to the campground. We debated going anyway since the sign said the doors closed at 5 and it was after 6, but figured neither of us would be happy sleeping in the woods and we were short on snacks. We’d like to come back to this campground with more time so we can properly do the hiking trails and also kayak through the water through all of these trees.

Heading north FL to NC

On our way out of the campground, we stopped at an "overlook", which was a surprisingly big ravine.  Too much brush and trees to get a good picture.  Headed towards Jacksonville and then back on the interstate.  Lots of boring driving here.  Van odometer switched to 270k. We could have probably driven a bit further, but decided to stay the night an hour north of Charlotte at Stone Mountain State Park (no, not the one with the people carved into it, this is different and way cooler).  We have stayed here many times before, and our goal was to try to hike to the top and back (probably 2 hours) as soon as we got there.  We got stuck in traffic around Charlotte (no surprise) and by the time we got there it would have been to dark to make it back safely. We drove back into town and had dinner at Skull Camp Brewing.  Their parking lot was a mess, and we parked on a pretty steep hill full of loose and washed out gravel.  "Are we going to get st...

Florida Gulf Coast Part 1

We are staying in the same campground again tonight, just a different spot.  The best thing about the van (compared to tent camping at least) is that everything is pretty much ready to go.  We just have to unplug the power, make sure nothing is going to fall off the counters, and hit up a place to dump out the bucket under the sink that catches the dishwater.  We usually forget to check the counters, but nothing has broken yet. It was a little chilly this morning, not quite 60 at 8am.  We were just a few miles from a few mile stretch of Gulf Islands National Seashore, so headed there first.  We were all ready to give them our parks pass, but before 9am they don't charge to get in.  Neat drive down through the park, and eventually we pulled off and crossed the dunes to the ocean.  Very secluded place, felt like we had it to ourselves.  We walked the beach for an hour.  I was worried it would rain, but stayed dry, just super humid. Next w...
